Entry #83

How would YOU like to have my music production improved from where it is now?

2017-08-15 21:05:14 by Xtrullor
Updated

I need some input from you on these following questions:

  • What do you think my music lacks at the moment?
  • What kind of things irk you the most about my music?
  • What kind of stuff you'd like me to (try to) do in the future?

I'm going to use the comment section below as a pool for inspiration and direction whenever I need you people the most.

Criticize, suggest, praise, contemplate, whatever you want to do. Be it super simple or long and comprehensive - bring it on.

It will have an effect in the long run, alongside my own vision.

I feel your 2016 style had more epic and emotional orchestra and your new style lacks that a little bit. I would like you to try to combine that with your new, more playful style. It might also be cool for you try some Alon Mor glitchy stuff. I think you'd be great at it.

I kind of feel that i miss alot of your heavy dubstep and electro songs, as that's where i originally fell in love with your music.
and as wr4ithmusic said, i would love to see you try some more industrial/glitchy music, the kind that makes me freak out because the drop sounds incredible.

What do you think my music lacks at the moment?

I don't necessarily think your music lacks anything at the moment. You're quite a skilled artist. As much as I love heavy basslines, I understand that's sometimes not the thing with melodic stuff.

What kind of things irk you the most about my music?

I feel like sometimes I can't find a drop in some of your songs. Catharsis and Terran Era are pretty good examples. In other songs though you have made it obvious where the drop is, but even on some of your drops I just can't feel them. It doesn't grab my attention (Karma kinda did with that growl though at 1:28 and 1:40, that was really satisfying). I guess that's just the kind of stuff I'm into.

Now, I'm not going to whine and say "but-but- I want old Xtrullor back", but I do admit I loved your old style. Songs like Paracosm, Screamroom, and Cry was what really got me into dubstep.

What kind of stuff you'd like me to (try to) do in the future?

Something super melodic and heavy combined. Lieon - The Traveler is a really good example. I just think it'd be interesting to see you try it sometime. Not that Supernova wasn't melodic and heavy, but y'know.

Anyways, I hope my opinions helped. I know it's not a 16 page essay like some critics might do, but I'm just going by what I see in your music and how my ears respond to it. That's all. Believe me, I'm not trying to say your music is horrible in any way. That'd make me a hypocrite.

I really enjoyed some of your more experimental tracks like Karma, Nirmiti, and The Armor of God. I feel that they were always some of the more unique songs and i always enjoyed them. Of course, tons of people also miss your old heavy and insane drops, so i'd suggest somehow incorporating some heavy stuff into whatever mind-blowing thing you come up with next.

i love your stuff its all 100/10 to me, if anything i'd like to hear something absolutely abstract with a bit of an opera feel. I bet you could pull that off, some epic abstract trip hop sounding thing x3 im prolly not making a lick of sense but in the end i love all your work! anxiously await your new material! keep on rockin!

Please remember this: this is completely made from a consumer`s view so please do not think my criticisms so seriously. But I still hope it helps. :)
Let`s see what I can do:

First of all, I don`t really think your music is lacking anything. With those phaser sounds and orchestral parts, it is amazing. But what I am missing at the moment is your 'older' phaser sounds such as the one used at the last drop of Xtrullor & Panda Party - Sheol] and the first bass drop of [Xtrullor - Supernova] since it made thing a lot heavier than things you use these days.

Second, there`s nothing virtually. Like I have written above, your epic orchestral parts make me feel great. But some of the slower drops such as the second drop of [Xtrullor - Karma Ft. Albert Hirönen] and the first drop of [HeliXiX &Xtrullor - Universal Expression] couldn`t satisfy my experience. It doesn`t really mean I don`t like it though; I still love the two music.

Third, I`d love to see some of your older basses in action with your new phaser sounds. For example, Au5, he sometimes uses raw basses as seen in [Au5 - Arise]. Not a phaser sounds; and it still sounds awesome. And my idea is, why don`t you use both phaser sounds and some of your older basess in one bass drop and make it a very new thing?(didn`t know how to word it properly sorry ;-;) Well, hope this was helpful forwarding to your music career...!

1. Your music lacks a melodic, Detious-like style.

2. Your music is AMAZING!!!!!!

3. You should try to incorporate a style that is similar to that of Detious.

What do you think my music lacks at the moment?

I really had to think about this. I cannot immediately think of a flaw off the top of my head. But, after a long think, some of the drops in your song seem quite underwhelming, however, this is not the case for some of your recent songs such as Karma. Songs like Event Horizon and Terran Era are some examples of what I mean by underwhelming, but the only thing I can really pick at is the drops, because Terran Era has an amazing intro and Event Horizon has an epic melody. But, in hindsight, you are improving in this region, like I said with Karma. Overall, just keep experimenting,
I'm sure your songs will get better.

What kind of things irk you the most about my music?

Mate, the only thing that irks me is GD. But, seriously, why would anything about your music irritate me? The only thing, now that I think about it, would be the mastering, which is clearly top notch in your tracks.

What kind of stuff you'd like me to (try to) do in the future?

If I was rash this is what I'd say:

"Well fuck u know me mate, heavy basses all the way just look at my profile pic! U ain't gonna get any easy listening shit anytime outta me broski!"

But, what I will say is, don't make me decide your future. I see many people questioning you on your new style, which completely unnecessary. I love your new stuff just as much I love your old stuff, like Ego Death, Corrosive, Screamroom and NK Remix. Keep doing what you're doing as long as your happy with it.

That's enough from me, now that I think of it, I should of typed this on my laptop...

;)

I love your songs Xtrullor. I think you are one of the best musicians on this site. However, I do want you to try to branch out a little. Sometime your orchestral songs sound too similar. That is why I really liked some of your projects this year, like the armor of god and nirmiti. It was just something different. Thats just my opinion.

Good Luck :D

You lack nothing, but I'd like to see more remixes like one of Snowblind maybe. Maybe?

A collab with Au5 or Fractal. C'mon, you're in their label.

I would like 1 classic dubstep like your old stuff (maybe even with vocals), but i love your new stuff.

More songs on itunes, maybe in album/EP format

Maybe a few more ambient songs in the next few years. I don't want it to dominate your music but I liked Flourescent Forests.

Other than that, keep on doing what you do. You are the Dream Theater of Dubstep.

"What do you think my music lacks at the moment?"

Some of your music doesn't carry enough momentum through the drop to be interesting enough. I don't mean to say anything negative, but the overestimated drops you have are a little sickening; they just let you down when going into the best part.

"What kind of things irk you the most about my music?"

I'd say nothing, if not for the fact that you've been overdoing it with the cinematic music lately. You need other things, like with The One Who Flies, by you and HeliXiX. Once going into that fact I realized other things that need fixing as well. Such as it has been almost nothing but dubstep for almost four years. You need some other stuff, maybe even happy songs.
It doesn't really irk me; it's more something that I feel needs changing.

"What kind of stuff you'd like me to (try to) do in the future?"

Like I said before, you need to cut down on cinematic music, and focus more on other kinds of music, and the emotion of the music as well.

Ah, Xtrullor. I love your music, and I treasure it. Probably because you put together my favorite two music genres together and make them actually good. (So fascinating.)

As a lacking, I honestly don't know... Maybe every once in a while maybe a harsher drop like that of Ego Death, Corrosive and the like. But incorporate the new atmospheric and orchestral feel to the music you have now. It would satisfy the audiences that love the old Xtrullor's type of music, as well of the lovers of your new style. (I love both ;-;)

What irks me the most of your music? That its so effing good ;-; Are you human? xD

Things you can try, I personally love your fast paced songs Like The One Who Flies and The Armor Of God. I absolutely loved those songs, and I think maybe a few more of those songs would be absolutely epic. I also enjoy your experimental songs alot, I honestly admire them, so Definently not experimentals as well.

Other than that, I look forward to seeing your music in the future, dude. Keep up the awesome work your doing. :D

Well, your drop growls have some fantastic sound design, but I don't really like the glitchy phasery style of it. I miss when your drops were as epic and intense as ones like Supernova or Ego Death. The new ones just tend to feel really underwhelming to me.

(Note: I'm not very experienced with the technical side of musical creation, so i'm not familiar with the specific terms and such.)

- What does your music lack at the moment?

Something I started noticing in your songs, starting from Earthsplitter and onwards, was that the bass drops seemed to be much emptier than before. I know it's always good to change style, evolve, and move onwards, but there are some elements of your old music that I would love for you to retain, such as sound-filled drops. In Nirmiti, the drops took me back to your "golden age" songs, but other drops like in Ichor and Event Horizon just seemed emptier. For reference, the drops that I think you did the best on include Ego Death, Cry, and Screamroom. I don't know the specific terms to describe them, but they're just so much more packed.

- What kind of things irk me the most about your music?

Like I said above, the drops. You do a great job with orchestral melodies in the buildup sections of Earthsplitter, Ichor, Even Horizon, Nirmiti, etc. But only one of those songs has a drop that really fills up every available space of sound. There's another thing about sound quality with your drops starting after Earthsplitter, they sound a little more "compressed", or like you're listening to it with your ears plugged (like when you dive far underwater, or travel in an airplane). It's hard to describe, but the sounds are just a little different than pre-earthsplitter.

- What kind of stuff would I like you to (try to) do in the future?

As you can probably guess, I would love some more drops like Nirmiti, or even like Ego Death, Cry, Screamroom, etc. Like I said, it's great to evolve your style, and I'm not asking you to go back in time and be the same xtrullor that existed in 2012, but I feel like I enjoyed the drops in those songs more.

However, all of this is my own opinion, and I'm not trying to belittle your music. It's great music, and I know how much work is put into it, these are just my thoughts. Have a nice day!

I like the orchestral aspect you have added in, but it seems you've focused a bit too much on a powerful feel in the orchestral tracks, and with that it has begun to subtract from the emotional feel some tracks have. I liked the vocals in Jnana, those had some great emotion to them, but recently your tracks have mainly consisted of powerful swells in the instruments and that doesn't always portray as much emotion. Also your chorus in most songs are pretty odd, the bass is very... Strange. I'm not sure how many people like it. Don't get me wrong, it is cool. But you have used it a lot recently and it got old fast. I really liked your older style in Era I where you had many different styled choruses, but now they are all starting to sound the same.

"What do you think my music lacks at the moment?"

I think your music currently doesn't really lack anything.
You manage to make a great mix of dubstep and orchestral sounds, and give your tracks amazing melodies. Nirmiti, Karma, Event Horizon, The armor of god and even Fluorescent forests are masterpieces each of them having a great atmosphere despite being different genres.

However, you could focus on adding emotional impact to your tracks like in Supernova.

"What kind of things irk you the most about my music?"

Nothing.
.
.
.
Well... Except the fact that you don't make complextro anymore ;-;

"What kind of stuff you'd like me to (try to) do in the future?"

I would love to hear orchestral influenced drum and bass from you. I know, you made two dnb-like tracks already and these were great, but I mean something like Muzzy - Children of hell or Feint - One last time but with your "epic orchestral dubstep" style. Something like second half of "The one who flies" but with dnb drop.

Also, have you ever considered making track that was fully (or mostly) orchestral? I'm curious how it would turn out.

I like your laser-induced sounds, such as the first drop from Ego Death and the second drop in Sheol. I still like your orchestral songs and sounds, such as in Ichor or Jnana, but I feel like it could use a touch of laser-bass (is that even a thing?). I still love the new music though, so keep up the good work!

What you lack in your music is that once you listen to the melody, it does not disappear in the brain. So the storage space of the brain disappears :)

What does it lack:
idk, sound amazing to me.

Irks me:
I really liked some of your older music, I think it'd be neat if you looked back on that style and tried to apply some of the harder drops to your orchestral dubstep

What you should try:
try melodic stuff. idk if you'd be good at it, but I like melodic stuff. and maybe you would be.

Love your music, I hope you make it far and never stop :D

Some things that you could is to fill in empty spaces like in Event Horizon. In the middle of the drops A LOT of parts are empty. However it is part of dubstep. I would recommend that you do fill in these empty spots. A lot of listeners would love your songs!

This isn't necessarily about the music itself but it kinda irks me that you haven't been posting your newer songs to YouTube lately. I don't know if you're still working on the videos or you just don't plan to upload them. I also wish you didn't hide your old projects so much. We all had to start somewhere and even though a lot of those projects are unfinished, they could inspire new music producers as well. It's just kinda sad to see that you're hiding this part of your timeline. :/

That's really all I have to say. Keep up the great work man. Best of luck to you.

What should you fix? Honestly nothing if you're trying to go for a more cinematic sound, but I do think you should bring back a weird time signature.
What irks me at the moment? The lack of cohesiveness. The song karma was great but seemed to lack a linear song style which made it feel the tiniest bit messy.
What stuff would I want you to do in the future? Have fun! This stuff is all my opinion and I think your music is great. I just wish your drop style was a little more linear so that I'm not confused. I wish you the best of luck in the future Mister Xtrullor.

Best of luck,

-What does it lack? well, your skills with production are lit af so,good on that side, honestly the only thing that I've seen is that there are a little less agressive stuff on your repertory (don't get me wrong,I LOVE your new stuff),so,what I mean is that you just have to look at your roots

-Idk,honestly I don't see anything wrong with your music in general to be honest

-I think that if you want to try something new,it would be perfect to either make a fusion of the 2013-2014 stuff with the new 2016-2017 Orchestral style and voila
or you could even try to find a even heavier sound

Gusearth1Gusearth1

2017-08-21 10:24:42

My previous post lacked specific details/examples from your music, so here's the updated "what irks me" section with timestamps and stuff.

- What kind of things irk me the most about your music?
(For reference, the previous post was mainly about the underwhelming drops)

Specific Examples:
- Earthsplitter
From 1:21-1:35, the buildup is GREAT. Even before that, you do a great job with the orchestral cinematic effect. But then, the drop just leaves me hanging. I read some of the other comments, and I think a good word that someone used to describe it is "overestimated". The buildup gets me going, expecting a huge drop, something a la Ego Death, but what happens sounds quite empty, and it doesn't really "flow", if you get what I mean. It sounds glitchy, and there's too much back and forth between nothing and then everything.

- Ichor
From 0:26-0:46, again you have your signature epic orchestral buildup. This time, the drop isn't as underwhelming, but really lacks the punch that your old songs had. I don't know if this is because you're experimenting with orchestral dubstep, or something else. Like I said in my previous post, I'm not gonna cry and complain about wanting the old Xtrullor back, but the drops you had back then were fantastic.

- Soulstorm
Nothing wrong with this song, it actually captures the force of your old drops, but in your new orchestral style.

- Nine Circles Remix, this one was just too glitch with the drops, and even with the buildup. I understand that it was very popular in the community, but it reminded me a lot of the Earthsplitter drop, not flowing very well.

- Terran Era has an AMAZING atmosphere to it, created by the orchestral sounds, but it all falls apart at 1:33 with another glitchy drop. It's not as empty as Earthsplitter, but instead of visualizing the music as a flow of water (like in Ego Death), it's like the flow keeps getting interrupted by rocks everywhere.

Fast-forward to the future, with
- Nirmiti, Once again has a great cinematic feel, just as good as Terran Era, but this time the drop is neither empty nor glitchy. If this is what future songs are to sound like, then I feel like you've found a good balance.

I could go on, but there's a character limit and I feel like my point has already been sufficiently made, I'm not whining about your style changing, just stating how I feel about some of the drops and such. Thanks for reading!

I know you've moved more towards orchestral dubstep, but I'd like to see a few tracks kinda like your classic style in a new, revised form using techniques you've learned more recently. Also, I'd like some more tracks like Event Horizon, although that would take forever lol.

What Do You Think My Music Lacks At The Moment?

Nothing, Your Music Is Nearly PERFECT, I Have Listened To Every Song You Have, And You Are By Far My Favourite Artist. You Are My Greatest Source Of Inspiration, And I Wish I Could Make Music Even Close To As Good As You.

What Kind Of Things Irk You The Most About My Music?

This Is The Only Thing That I Think You Could Improve On, And It Is That Sometimes, Parts Of Your Songs Seem Kinda Empty. For Example, Catharsis, The Intro Is Just A Piano For Some 30 Seconds, And I Am Not Sure That It Fits With The Rest Of The Song.

What Kind Of Stuff You'd Like Me To (Try To) Do In The Future?

Maybe Try To Do More Intense Style Stuff Like Instant Reaction, Or Nirmiti. Not Saying I Don't Like Your Stuff, It Is Just That Maybe You Could Go A Bit More Intense, Also, What Plugin Do You Use In Supernova? For The First Sound In The Drop. Sounds Like Something Harmor Could Make, But I Am Not Sure.

Just Keep Doing What Your Doing, And I've A Feeling You Will Become The Greatest Artist Ever To Live,

Q-"What do you think my music lacks at the moment?"
A-Your music lacks more dubstep growl. This lack I heard in the music named "Nirmiti". Otherwise, everything is enough!
Q-"What kind of things irk you the most about my music?"
A-I do not like how you make some music quieter, examples of "Eartsplitter", "Jnana". That's kind of annoying me.
LastQ-"What kind of stuff you'd like me to (try to) do in the future?"
A-Try to make the kind of music "epic ambient / hybrid drum n bass orchestral dubstep" I adore it.
You can also try to make more mind blowing songs. Such as "Supernova", "Jnana", "Eartsplitter".
That's all I wanted to say. Good luck to you in the future!

Your music is very unique. I have never heard anything similar to it. While I do love your more recent songs, I have an idea. Nirmiti has a very powerful and full atmosphere, Earthsplitter and Armor of God have incredible melodies to them, and the beat drops in songs such as Supernova and Sphero have the melody and dubstep elements intertwined throughout. (Opposed to having the dubstep and melody separate during the drop) While Karma was good, I do like your orchestral music the best! Thanks! (You are the best for sure)

I say this: u need more dynamics
I like u old loops (Sphero was sooo epic) and new melodies (like Jnana)
Slome questions:
-Do u play StarCraft II? (song "Terran Era" its about SC2's race?)
-Can u add mre SC2 and steampunk themes on ur songs (like Terran Era and Nirmiti&)

What does your music lack? In my opinion, a lot of the catchier aspects of your music from 2014-2016 are no longer present, and that makes some songs rather forgettable. I would definitely like more melodic themes.

What irks me about your music? Honestly nothing. I love your music.

What would I like to see in the future? What would be cool is to see VIPs of your older tracks, especially your more famous ones. I would love to see songs like "Ego Death," "Supernova," or even "Bitter Chips" changed and adapted to sound new again, this time with your more powerful orchestral dubstep in contrast to the old house music style.

JG-77JG-77

2017-08-30 22:49:14

As far as the first two questions go, there's not anything that I can think of that you music lacks, nor is there anything that irks me. However, it would be interesting to see you experiment with other genres, kind of like what you did with Armor of God, and Fluorescent Forests, both of which I enjoyed for their own reasons. Some other genres I'd like to see include a 100% orchestra song, a piano song, or chiptune/chipstep. Some other things you could do that I think a lot of people would enjoy is to create a song using styles and sounds from your older stuff from 2014 and earlier, or one that blends your old and new style using both your newer and older instruments.

Anyway, regaurdless of what you do, I'm certain it will be great, and I look foward to more Xtrullor :)

In my opinion, your music is classified in 4 ages:
-Genesis: From your first song to Corrosive, this songs were your first attempts to dubstep, and they were really nice and enjoyable to hear.
-Ascension: From Corrosive to Supernova, this were your songs where you were keen on the type of dubstep you make now, but without the orchesthal part.
-Zenith: From Supernova to The armor of God, this songs were just the best thing a human could ever make. You put Epicness over Quality, and all your song were just...perfect.
-Decadence: From The armor of God till now, where you decided to forget about Zenith, and put Quality over Epicness.
So, what should you do?
Bring Zenith back. People dont want you to make more and more dubstep if they dont come from your heart. People want the return of songs like Ichor, Earthsplitter, Birth of the Sun, and your best song (in my opinion), Soulstorm. If you bring back Zenith, youll just be perfect, as you were before.
This is all that we need. Epicness over Quality.
Hope this helps

I think the style you have right now is great and everything but i feel like your 2015-2016 style was the greatest. And don't get me wrong, your new style is amazing! I would just hate for you to completely forget about your older style and move on from it. Maybe you could do both. You could release some of your amazing experimental tracks alongside some of your epic orchestral dubstep tracks. As for collabs and remixes, I think they're fine. Hopefully this helps.

One thing I think works wonders is using an unusual key signature, like the 7/8 one in Event Horizon. I just feel like these give so many new options for melodies, although it can be a bit hard to come up with them.
